May 23, 2005

Hello for Nathan. This is Brian making an update as internet access is very limited for him. As of tomorrow (Tuesday, May 24, 2005) Nathan will begin to receive all his wonderful vaccinations. He will be receiving vaccinations for yellow fever, mmr (mumps, measiles and rubella), and polio. He will then be receiving vaccinations for typhoid, rabies, and hepatitis A & B once he gets to Africa. Also on the 24th he will be bused to the Philadelphia airport at noon to catch his flight to Lusaka, Zambia. This flight will take approximately 16 hours and will arrive in Lusaka on Wednesday, May 25.

From here he will spend 2 days in Lusaka for his Zambia orientation, then travel to Mwekera Village on May 28 (outside Kitwe and 350km (217.5 miles) north of Lusaka) for 9 weeks. Here he will be staying with a host family in a house compound in which he will have his own hut.

Nathan also wanted me to pass on a few other things:
-Once in Lusaka (Wed. May 25) he will have only brief email access.
-He will not be able to check email for the 9 weeks after that.
-Once he has his permanent address he will send it to me and his parents. It will then be posted on his Zambia page on his website.
-Once he is established he will have internet access every 1-3 months.
-Snail mail (air mail) is the best way to communicate with him. A word about the air mail: It takes 10 days to reach Lusaka from the United States. From there it takes up to 2 weeks to get delivered to the rural parts of the country.
-There are 35 people in the Zambian group leaving with him.

I will continue to post updates for Nathan as I get them.
